Breast Lift

Pregnancy, weight change and time pull the breast downward and empty the top. A breast lift raises the nipple, removes stretched skin and reshapes what remains, with or without added volume.

About the procedure

A breast lift (mastopexy) reshapes and raises breasts that have sagged by removing excess skin, tightening the supporting tissue and moving the nipple and areola to a higher, forward-facing position. It can also reduce an enlarged areola. The procedure restores shape and position; it does not add much volume on its own, which is why it is often paired with implants or fat transfer when fullness has been lost as well.

The right technique depends on how far the breast has descended and how much skin needs to go. Dr. Khan grades the degree of sagging at consultation and recommends the approach that gives you the lift you need with the least scarring that will actually hold.

What it addresses

  • Breasts that have dropped after pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Sagging from weight fluctuation, aging or gravity
  • Nipples that point downward or sit at or below the breast fold
  • Loss of upper-breast fullness and projection
  • Enlarged or stretched areolas
  • Asymmetry in breast position

What it doesn't do

  • A lift does not significantly increase size. If you want more fullness, implants or fat transfer are added to the plan.
  • Every lift leaves scars. The technique that gives more lift generally leaves more scar, and Dr. Khan is honest about that trade-off.
  • Results change with future pregnancy, breastfeeding and significant weight change. Timing matters.

Breast lift techniques

Breast lift techniques explained.

01

Anchor (inverted-T) lift

For significant sagging. Incisions around the areola, vertically down to the fold and along the fold allow the most skin removal and reshaping. The trade-off is the longest scar.

02

Vertical (lollipop) lift

For moderate sagging. Incisions around the areola and vertically down to the fold give substantial lift and reshaping with less scarring than the anchor approach.

03

Periareolar (donut) lift

For mild sagging. A single incision around the areola allows modest nipple repositioning and areola reduction with the least visible scar, but limited lifting power.

04

Crescent lift

A small crescent of skin removed above the areola for a very minor nipple reposition, most often combined with breast augmentation rather than used alone.

05

Lift with implants or fat transfer

When both position and volume have been lost, Dr. Khan may combine the lift with implants (augmentation mastopexy) or with fat transfer for a softer, more modest increase in fullness.

The Empowered approach

How Dr. Khan approaches a breast lift

She evaluates the degree of sagging, your skin quality and how much breast tissue you have, then matches the technique to what will hold. Choosing a shorter-scar technique that can’t deliver the lift you need is a false economy, and she will say so. Incisions are planned carefully and closed in layers so scars settle as thin lines over time.

Shape matters as much as height. Her goal is a breast that is lifted, projects forward and has natural fullness, with the nipple centered on the mound, rather than a breast that simply sits higher. When volume is also wanted, she advises candidly on whether implants or fat transfer fit your goals, and whether to combine or stage them.

Who it may suit

You may be a candidate if…

  • Your breasts have sagged and the nipples sit low or point downward.
  • You are in good general health, at a stable weight, and not planning pregnancy or significant weight loss soon.
  • You do not smoke, or are willing to stop before and after surgery, since smoking impairs healing of lift incisions.
  • You accept scars as the trade-off for a lifted, reshaped breast.
  • Dr. Khan confirms candidacy in person after assessing breast position, skin elasticity and tissue volume.

Candidacy is confirmed at your consultation, after an examination and a review of your medical history.

What to expect

  1. 01

    Consultation

About an hour with Dr. Khan to assess the degree of sagging and skin elasticity, review technique options and scar patterns, decide whether implants or fat transfer belong in the plan, and discuss recovery.

  2. 02

    Your plan

A written surgical plan covering the technique, incision pattern, any added volume, anesthesia planning and pre-operative instructions. Pricing is reviewed with your plan.

  3. 03

    Surgery day

Excess skin is removed, the breast tissue is reshaped and supported, the nipple and areola are moved to their new position and incisions are closed in layers. You go home in a surgical support bra.

  4. 04

    Recovery and follow-up

A support bra and activity limits protect the incisions during early healing. Follow-up visits track scar maturation and settling, and established surgical patients have a direct way to reach Dr. Khan after hours.

Recovery

Healing takes time, and it varies.

Expect swelling, bruising and soreness in the first weeks, supported by a surgical bra worn as directed. Most patients return to desk work within about one to two weeks, with lifting and exercise restricted until Dr. Khan clears them. Avoid raising the arms overhead or sleeping on your stomach early on.

Breasts sit high and look a little boxy at first. The shape softens and settles over several months, and scars, which are red and raised initially, fade gradually over the first year or more with sun protection and scar care.

Risks and limitations

What you should know before deciding.

Every surgery carries risk. These are the ones most relevant to this procedure; Dr. Khan reviews your personal risk profile and the alternatives with you before anything is scheduled.

  • Visible, widened or raised scars, especially along the vertical and fold incisions
  • Changes in nipple sensation, usually temporary but occasionally lasting
  • Asymmetry in breast shape, nipple position or areola size
  • Delayed wound healing, particularly where incisions meet beneath the breast, and more common in smokers
  • Hematoma (a collection of blood), fluid accumulation (seroma) or infection
  • Partial loss of nipple or areola tissue from compromised blood supply, which is rare
  • Recurrence of some sagging over time, particularly with pregnancy or weight change
  • Reactions to anesthesia

FAQ

Breast Lift questions

Every answer here is general information. Your own plan, risks and recovery are discussed in person at your consultation.

How much lift can a breast lift give me?

It depends on where your breasts start, your skin elasticity and the technique used. Mild sagging, with the nipple at about the level of the fold, can often be corrected with a periareolar lift. Moderate sagging usually calls for a vertical lift, and more pronounced sagging with downward-pointing nipples generally needs an anchor technique. Dr. Khan assesses your degree of sagging at consultation and shows you what is realistic for your anatomy.

Will I lose volume after a breast lift?

A lift reshapes and repositions the tissue you have rather than removing much of it, though some patients notice a slightly smaller look once stretched skin is gone and the tissue is tightened. If you have lost fullness through pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss, Dr. Khan may recommend adding implants or fat transfer so that position and volume are restored at the same time.

Breast lift or breast augmentation: which one do I need?

If your nipples sit low or point down, you need a lift; adding an implant without one tends to make sagging more obvious. If your breasts sit well but have lost fullness, augmentation alone may be enough. When both apply, the procedures are combined as an augmentation mastopexy. Dr. Khan examines nipple position, skin and tissue volume at consultation and tells you which applies.

How long do breast lift results last?

Many years for most patients, but longevity depends on your age at surgery, skin quality, genetics and what happens afterward. Future pregnancy, breastfeeding and significant weight swings can stretch the result, and gravity and aging continue regardless. A stable weight, daily supportive bras, sun protection and not smoking all help. Some patients choose a secondary lift many years later.

Can a breast lift be part of a mommy makeover?

Yes, and it commonly is. A lift, with or without implants, is often combined with a tummy tuck and liposuction when pregnancy has changed both the breasts and the abdomen. Some patients combine a lift with a reduction when they want smaller as well as higher breasts. Whether to combine or stage depends on your health, the extent of surgery and recovery considerations, which Dr. Khan reviews with you.
