NeoGraft Hair Restoration

A hairline that has moved, a part that has widened, a crown that shows more than it used to. NeoGraft moves your own healthy follicles where they are needed, awake and comfortable, with no strip of scalp removed.

About the procedure

Hair restoration at Empowered Plastic Surgery is built around NeoGraft, a follicular unit extraction (FUE) technique. Individual follicles are taken one at a time from a donor area at the back or sides of the scalp and placed into thinning areas, so there is no linear strip scar and recovery is generally quicker than with older methods. The procedure is performed while you are awake, with local anesthesia and medication to help you relax.

Dr. Khan pairs the transplant with your own biology and with energy treatments when they fit: platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to support the scalp and the transplanted hair, ThermiSmooth to prepare the recipient area and red light therapy during healing. Together these make up what the practice calls Empowered Regenerative Hair Restoration. The first step, though, is a consultation to understand what is driving your hair loss and whether a transplant is the right answer at all.

What it addresses

  • A receding hairline or thinning temples in men
  • Thinning at the crown
  • Diffuse thinning or a widening part in women, a group often underserved in hair restoration
  • A hairline that has changed over time and bothers you
  • Density that has not recovered after shedding related to significant weight loss

What it doesn't do

  • A transplant redistributes hair; it does not create new follicles. Results depend on having a healthy donor area with enough to move.
  • It does not stop an underlying pattern of hair loss from progressing in untreated areas, so some patients plan a second session or ongoing support.
  • Active shedding is usually not the right time to transplant. Evaluation and timing come first.

What the program can include

What the program can include explained.

01

NeoGraft hair transplant

Follicles are extracted individually from the donor area with a small punch and placed into the recipient area in a pattern that follows your natural growth direction and hairline shape. No strip of scalp is removed, so the donor area heals as scattered tiny dots rather than a line.

02

PRP support

Platelet-rich plasma is prepared from a small sample of your own blood and applied to the scalp to support the health of the follicles and the transplanted hair. It can be used at the time of the procedure and in follow-up sessions.

03

Energy treatments

ThermiSmooth, a gentle radiofrequency treatment, can be used to prepare the recipient area, and red light therapy sessions may be scheduled during recovery and regrowth.

04

The regenerative package

Depending on your plan, the package may include the NeoGraft transplant performed by Dr. Khan, PRP treatment, ThermiSmooth preparation, a course of red light sessions and scheduled follow-up visits to track growth.

The Empowered approach

How Dr. Khan approaches hair restoration

Hair loss has many causes, so she starts with diagnosis rather than a procedure. She reviews when the change began, how it has progressed, your family history, medications and any recent weight change, and she examines the scalp, the pattern of thinning and the donor area. For some patients the right plan is PRP or monitoring rather than a transplant; for others a transplant is the clear answer.

When a transplant is planned, she designs the hairline and the distribution of grafts for a natural result that will still look right as you age. She places a priority on protecting the donor area and on supporting graft health through the regenerative elements of the program rather than simply moving as many follicles as possible.

Awake and comfortable

NeoGraft hair restoration is performed while you are awake. Local anesthesia numbs the donor and recipient areas, and you are given medication to help you relax. Many patients appreciate avoiding general anesthesia for a procedure like this, and you can take breaks, listen to music and communicate with the team throughout.

Dr. Khan explains exactly what to expect during the procedure at your consultation, including how long the session is likely to take for your graft count and how the anesthesia is given.

Who it may suit

You may be a candidate if…

  • You have a healthy donor area at the back or sides of the scalp with enough density to move.
  • Your hair loss has been evaluated so its cause and pattern are understood, and it is not in an active shedding phase.
  • You have realistic expectations about density, about the timeline for growth and about the possibility of a second session.
  • You are in good general health and able to follow the aftercare, including protecting the grafts in the first days.
  • You may be a candidate if these apply, and Dr. Khan confirms candidacy in person after examining your scalp, donor area and pattern of thinning.

Candidacy is confirmed at your consultation, after an examination and a review of your medical history.

What to expect

  1. 01

    Consultation

About an hour with Dr. Khan to review your history and what you have noticed, examine the scalp and donor area, discuss whether NeoGraft, PRP, energy treatments or a combination fits, and talk through realistic results and timelines.

  2. 02

    Preparation

A written plan covering the graft estimate, hairline design, which regenerative elements are included and pre-procedure instructions such as medications to pause and how to prepare your hair. Pricing is reviewed with your plan.

  3. 03

    Procedure day

The donor area is trimmed and numbed, follicles are extracted individually, and the recipient sites are prepared and grafted following the planned design. You are awake with local anesthesia and medication to relax. Sessions can take several hours depending on graft count, and you go home the same day.

  4. 04

    Recovery and follow-up

You receive detailed instructions for washing, sleeping and protecting the grafts. Dr. Khan follows your healing and growth at scheduled visits, and established surgical patients have a direct way to reach her after hours.

Recovery

Healing takes time, and it varies.

The first days matter most. Expect mild tenderness, some swelling and small scabs at the graft sites, which typically clear within a week or so as you follow the gentle washing routine you are given. The donor area heals as tiny dots that are hidden once hair grows back over them. Many patients return to desk work within a few days, with exercise and anything that could disturb the grafts held back until Dr. Khan clears it.

Growth is slow by nature. The transplanted hairs often shed in the first weeks, which is normal, then begin to regrow over the following months. Density continues to build gradually, and the final result takes many months to show. PRP and red light sessions are scheduled during this period when they are part of your plan.

Risks and limitations

What you should know before deciding.

Every surgery carries risk. These are the ones most relevant to this procedure; Dr. Khan reviews your personal risk profile and the alternatives with you before anything is scheduled.

  • Not every graft survives, and the final density may be less than hoped
  • Temporary shedding of existing hair near the recipient area (shock loss), which usually recovers
  • Swelling of the forehead, tenderness, numbness or itching while the scalp heals
  • Small dot scars in the donor area, visible if hair there is cut very short
  • Infection, folliculitis or small cysts at graft sites
  • An unnatural hairline or direction of growth if design or placement is poor
  • Continued hair loss in untreated areas, which may call for a second session or ongoing support
  • Reactions to local anesthesia or sedating medication

FAQ

Hair Restoration questions

Every answer here is general information. Your own plan, risks and recovery are discussed in person at your consultation.

Is NeoGraft hair restoration really done awake?

Yes. Local anesthesia numbs the donor and recipient areas and you receive medication to help you relax, so you are comfortable but awake throughout. Many patients prefer avoiding general anesthesia for a procedure like this. You can take breaks during the session, and Dr. Khan will walk you through exactly what to expect at your consultation.

Will the donor area show?

With FUE, follicles are removed individually, so the donor area heals as scattered tiny dots rather than a linear scar. Once the surrounding hair grows back, those dots are generally hidden at normal hair lengths. Dr. Khan spreads extraction across the donor area so it does not look thinned.

Does NeoGraft work for women?

Often, yes, and women are an underserved group in hair restoration. Female hair loss tends to show as overall thinning or a widening part rather than a receding hairline, and it can have different causes, so evaluation matters even more. Dr. Khan assesses whether a transplant, PRP, energy treatments or a combination fits your pattern.

How long until I see new growth after a hair transplant?

Longer than most people expect. The transplanted hairs typically shed in the first weeks, then regrow gradually over the following months. Density keeps building over the better part of a year, and the final result is judged at that point rather than early. PRP and red light sessions, when included, are scheduled through this period.

What do PRP and energy treatments add to a transplant?

PRP concentrates growth factors from your own blood and is applied to the scalp to support the follicles and the transplanted hair. ThermiSmooth is used to prepare the recipient area, and red light therapy supports the scalp during healing and regrowth. They are offered as support for graft health rather than as treatments that work on their own, and Dr. Khan includes them when they fit your plan.

I started shedding after weight loss. Should I have a transplant?

Usually not right away. Shedding after rapid weight loss is often temporary and can improve as the body stabilizes, and transplanting during active shedding gives a poor result. Dr. Khan evaluates the cause and timing first, and may suggest monitoring or PRP before considering a transplant. The Ozempic hair loss page covers this in more detail.
