About the procedure

Labiaplasty reshapes or reduces the labia minora (inner lips) or labia majora (outer lips). Labia come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, all of them healthy. Some people choose surgery because the tissue causes chafing, irritation or pain during exercise, sitting or intimacy; others do so because of asymmetry or because they would prefer a different appearance. Both are valid reasons, and neither needs justifying.

Dr. Khan approaches this surgery with discretion and care for function. Her techniques are designed to preserve sensation and the natural edge of the tissue, and the consultation happens in a private setting where you can describe exactly what bothers you and what you would like to change.

What it addresses

  • Labia minora that extend beyond the labia majora and cause chafing or irritation
  • Discomfort during cycling, running, yoga or other exercise
  • Pain or self-consciousness during intimacy
  • Noticeable asymmetry between the two sides
  • Changes after childbirth, weight change or with age
  • Enlarged or loose labia majora

What it doesn't do

  • Labiaplasty addresses the external labia. It does not treat vaginal laxity, pelvic floor concerns or sexual function on its own.
  • Results are individual. Dr. Khan aims for comfort and balance, not a particular “look,” and she will tell you candidly what surgery can and can’t change.
  • Healing takes patience. Swelling and sensitivity in the first weeks are normal, and the final appearance takes a few months to settle.

Techniques Dr. Khan uses

Techniques Dr. Khan uses explained.

01

Trim technique

Excess tissue is removed along the outer edge of the labia minora and the edge is closed with fine sutures. It is a direct way to reduce length and address uneven or darker edge tissue.

02

Wedge technique

A V-shaped section is removed from the middle of the labia minora and the edges are brought together, which preserves the natural edge and color of the tissue. It suits patients who want to keep the original contour.

03

Composite or combined approach

Elements of both techniques, chosen for your anatomy, when a single method would not achieve the balance of comfort and contour you want.

04

Labia majora reduction or tightening

Addresses enlarged or loose outer labia through skin and fat removal, or through skin tightening for milder laxity, depending on what has changed.

The Empowered approach

How Dr. Khan approaches labiaplasty

Function comes first. Her technique is planned around preserving nerve pathways and blood supply so sensation is maintained, with incisions placed along natural edges and folds where they are least visible once healed. Fine sutures and careful tissue handling support a smooth, natural-looking result.

The consultation is private and unhurried. Dr. Khan examines the area in a comfortable setting, listens to what concerns you, and recommends a technique based on your anatomy and your goals, whether those are mainly about comfort, appearance or both. Your privacy is respected at every step, from scheduling through follow-up.

Recovery

Healing takes time, and it varies.

The first one to two weeks involve rest, gentle walking, cold packs for comfort and loose cotton underwear. Discomfort is usually mild to moderate and manageable with medication. Many patients return to desk work within one to two weeks, avoiding prolonged sitting at first. Light activity returns over the following weeks, and exercise, sports and sexual activity are typically cleared around six to eight weeks as Dr. Khan confirms healing.

Temporary swelling, numbness or heightened sensitivity are expected and usually resolve over a few weeks to a few months. Incision lines may look slightly pink or raised at first and fade over roughly three to six months into fine lines within the natural anatomy.

Risks and limitations

What you should know before deciding.

Every surgery carries risk. These are the ones most relevant to this procedure; Dr. Khan reviews your personal risk profile and the alternatives with you before anything is scheduled.

  • Bleeding, infection or separation of the incision edges during early healing
  • Temporary or, less commonly, lasting changes in sensation
  • Asymmetry, over-reduction or under-reduction, with the possibility of a revision
  • Scar tissue that is tender or more visible than expected
  • Pain with intercourse during healing, and rarely beyond it
  • Reactions to anesthesia
  • Dissatisfaction with the appearance despite a technically sound result

FAQ

Labiaplasty questions

Every answer here is general information. Your own plan, risks and recovery are discussed in person at your consultation.

Will labiaplasty change sensation or sexual function?

The techniques Dr. Khan uses are designed to preserve the nerves and blood supply that sensation depends on, and most patients maintain normal sensation after healing. Temporary numbness or heightened sensitivity in the first weeks to months is common and usually resolves. Lasting change is uncommon but possible, and she discusses that risk candidly before surgery.

Trim or wedge: how do I know which technique is right?

The trim technique removes tissue along the outer edge and is a direct way to reduce length and address uneven edge tissue. The wedge technique removes a section from the middle and keeps the natural edge and color. Which fits depends on your anatomy, what bothers you and what you want preserved. Dr. Khan recommends one after examining you, and sometimes combines elements of both.

When can I return to exercise and intimacy?

Gentle walking is encouraged early, but exercise, cycling and sexual activity are usually paused for about six to eight weeks so the incisions heal fully. Desk work is often comfortable within one to two weeks if you avoid prolonged sitting. Dr. Khan confirms each step at your follow-up visits.

Is labiaplasty medical or cosmetic?

It can be either or both. When the labia cause chronic irritation, pain with activity or difficulty with hygiene, there is a functional reason for surgery. Many patients also choose it for appearance alone, which is equally valid. Most insurance plans consider labiaplasty cosmetic and do not cover it, and Dr. Khan can tell you whether your situation warrants medical documentation.

Can labiaplasty be combined with other procedures?

Yes. It is sometimes included in a mommy makeover or performed alongside a tummy tuck or liposuction when more than one area is being addressed. Dr. Khan will discuss whether combining makes sense for your plan and recovery.
