About the treatment
Hair shedding after rapid weight loss, with or without a GLP-1 medication such as Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro, is usually related to the stress of fast weight change, shifts in nutrition and the way the hair growth cycle responds, rather than any direct effect on the scalp. A larger share of hairs than usual moves into the resting and shedding phase, and the shedding shows up weeks to months after the trigger. For many people it is temporary and improves as the body stabilizes.
Dr. Khan’s role is evaluation and realistic planning. She reviews when the shedding began, how your weight has changed, your nutrition and medications, and the pattern on the scalp, and she helps you distinguish temporary shedding from an underlying hair-loss pattern that was already present. From there, the plan may be monitoring, supportive care, PRP, or hair restoration, and sometimes a referral back to your prescribing physician for labs or nutrition review.
What it addresses
- Increased shedding in the shower or on the pillow
- A thinner ponytail or less density through the part
- Hairline or temple changes noticed after major weight loss
- Dryness, breakage or texture changes
- Uncertainty about whether shedding is temporary or progressive
What it doesn't do
- Dr. Khan does not prescribe, adjust or stop weight-loss medication. Any question about the medication itself belongs with your prescribing physician.
- No treatment can promise regrowth. Whether hair recovers depends on the cause, nutrition, genetics, hormones and whether an underlying pattern of hair loss was already present.
- Shedding that is still active is usually not the right time for a hair transplant. Evaluation and timing come first.
