ThermiSmooth Skin Tightening

For skin that has started to soften but is nowhere near ready for surgery, gentle radiofrequency heat can prompt the collagen response that firms it. No incisions, a series of comfortable sessions, and an honest answer about what energy can and cannot do.

About the treatment

ThermiSmooth is a non-surgical radiofrequency treatment that warms the skin from the outside. A smooth handpiece glides over the treatment area and raises the tissue to a controlled temperature, which signals the body to build new collagen over the following months. The sessions are comfortable, there are no incisions and you return to your day immediately.

Dr. Khan offers it as one rung on a skin-tightening ladder that runs from surface energy, through minimally invasive tightening, to surgery. Because she performs every step of that ladder, her recommendation is based on how much laxity you actually have rather than on which device is in the room.

What it addresses

  • Early softening along the jawline
  • Fine lines and crepey skin around the eyes
  • Mild laxity on the cheeks and lower face
  • Loose skin on the neck in its early stages
  • Skin texture after modest weight loss

What it doesn't do

  • Energy firms skin; it does not remove it. If you have a significant amount of loose skin, ThermiSmooth will disappoint you, and Dr. Khan will say so.
  • Results are gradual and modest, build over months and depend on your skin’s ability to make collagen.
  • A series of sessions is usually needed, and maintenance treatments help hold the result.

Where ThermiSmooth sits on the tightening ladder

Where ThermiSmooth sits on the tightening ladder explained.

01

ThermiSmooth

A surface treatment with no incisions. The handpiece warms the skin to a target temperature and holds it there while the area is treated. Best for mild laxity and fine lines on the face, around the eyes and along the jawline, delivered as a series of sessions.

02

Renuvion

When more tightening is needed than a surface treatment can provide, Renuvion delivers energy beneath the skin through tiny entry points, often alongside liposuction. It is a separate procedure with its own page, and Dr. Khan will tell you if your laxity calls for it.

03

Surgery

A facelift, neck lift, tummy tuck, arm lift or thigh lift removes excess skin, which no energy treatment can do. When laxity is significant, surgery is the honest answer and the one that will give you the result you want.

The Empowered approach

How Dr. Khan approaches non-surgical tightening

She matches the treatment to the degree of laxity. At consultation she assesses skin thickness, elasticity and how much the tissue has descended, then tells you which rung of the ladder is realistic for your goals. Patients with early laxity are good candidates for a ThermiSmooth series; patients with more are steered to Renuvion or surgery rather than sold a series that will not deliver.

When ThermiSmooth is the right choice, she plans it around your other treatments. It pairs well with injectables and skin-quality care, and it can be useful for maintaining the skin after a surgical procedure once healing is complete.

Who it may suit

You may be a candidate if…

  • You have mild laxity or early crepiness on the face, around the eyes, along the jawline or on the neck.
  • Your skin quality is reasonable, and you understand that the result will be a subtle firming rather than a lift.
  • You prefer a no-downtime, non-surgical approach and can commit to a series of sessions.
  • You are in good general health and have no implanted electronic device, active infection or skin condition in the treatment area that would make radiofrequency inappropriate.
  • You may be a candidate if these apply, and Dr. Khan confirms candidacy in person after assessing your skin and the degree of laxity.

Candidacy is confirmed at your consultation, after an examination and a review of your medical history.

How treatment works

  1. 01

    Consultation

Dr. Khan examines the areas you are concerned about, assesses skin quality and laxity, and tells you whether ThermiSmooth, Renuvion or surgery is the right rung. She explains what results are realistic for your skin.

  2. 02

    Treatment plan

A plan covering the areas to treat, the number of sessions in the series and the spacing between them, and how the treatment fits alongside anything else you are considering. Pricing is reviewed with your plan.

  3. 03

    Treatment day

A conductive gel is applied and the handpiece moves over the skin in steady passes while the temperature is monitored. Most patients describe it as a warm massage. Sessions are relatively short, and you can drive yourself home.

  4. 04

    Aftercare and results

Mild pinkness and warmth fade within a few hours. There is no downtime. Firming develops gradually over the weeks and months following the series as collagen builds, and Dr. Khan reviews progress against baseline photos at follow-up.

Recovery

Aftercare and results.

There is little to recover from. The skin may look slightly pink or feel warm for a few hours after a session, and you can return to work, exercise and skincare the same day. Makeup can be applied once the skin has cooled.

Because the treatment works by prompting your body to build collagen, the result is not immediate. Most patients begin to notice changes over the following weeks, with the fuller effect developing over several months after the series is complete. Periodic maintenance sessions help sustain it, and results vary with age, skin quality and sun exposure.

Side effects and limitations

What to weigh before treatment.

Most side effects are mild and temporary, but treatment has limits. Dr. Khan reviews these with you before treatment and tells you candidly when another option would serve you better.

  • Temporary redness, warmth, mild swelling or tenderness in the treated area
  • Results that are subtle, gradual or less than hoped, since response depends on your own collagen production
  • No improvement for skin that is too loose for an energy treatment, which is why candidacy matters
  • Rarely, a superficial burn, blister or small area of texture change if the skin overheats
  • Temporary numbness or altered sensation
  • The need for ongoing maintenance sessions to hold the result
  • Not appropriate with certain implanted electronic devices, active infection or some skin conditions in the treatment area

FAQ

ThermiSmooth Skin Tightening questions

Every answer here is general information. Your own plan, risks and recovery are discussed in person at your consultation.

What is the difference between ThermiSmooth and Renuvion?

ThermiSmooth warms the skin from the surface through a handpiece, with no incisions, and is done as a series of sessions for mild laxity. Renuvion delivers energy beneath the skin through tiny entry points for a stronger tightening effect, usually paired with liposuction, and is a separate procedure described on its own page. Dr. Khan recommends one or the other based on how much laxity you have.

How much tightening is realistic with ThermiSmooth?

A subtle firming and smoothing, most noticeable around the eyes, along the jawline and on early neck laxity. It is not a lift, and it does not remove skin. If what you want is a visibly tighter jawline or neck with real excess skin, Dr. Khan will tell you that Renuvion or surgery is what will get you there.

What does a ThermiSmooth session feel like, and is there downtime?

Most patients describe steady, comfortable warmth, similar to a hot-stone massage, as the handpiece moves over the skin. The temperature is monitored throughout. Afterward the skin may look pink for a few hours. There are no restrictions, and you can go straight back to your day.

How many ThermiSmooth sessions will I need?

It is typically done as a series of several sessions spaced a few weeks apart, with the number depending on the area and your skin. Because collagen builds slowly, the result continues to develop for months after the last session, and many patients return for maintenance to hold it. Dr. Khan sets the series at your consultation.

When should I consider surgery instead of skin tightening?

When you can pinch or lift a real fold of loose skin, or when the tissue has descended enough that you want a visibly different contour. Energy treatments firm skin; they do not remove it. Dr. Khan performs both, so her advice is driven by what will work for your anatomy, not by what is easier to sell.
